Welcome to Shee-Eire.com
section on Cairns.
Cairns are artificial mounds of stones or rocks. There may be chambers
beneath many of the Cairns, which would re class them as Passage Chambers, but largely they remain unexplored.
Little remains to many of these Cairns as they where robbed of the stones mostly during the 17th-19 centuries to make roads, walls and houses. I have heard of one site in the lat 10 years being destroyed by a rock breaker so the land owner could use it to make a driveway to a new house.
They are mostly
found at the top of the hills and mountains which begs the question of how and why
they shipped millions of tons of loose rock to the most distant places in the
country.
