Lir was the Father God of the Sea.  His son Manannan ruled the waves after him. 

He is associated with the Welsh God Llyr.  The myths of Manannan and Lír are a relatively late addition to Irish Mythology and accounts of these gods only begin to appear in medieval times.

 It would seem that the medieval writers merged the character of the Sea God Lir (Llyr-Wales) known across the Celtic influenced lands with the Tuatha de Danann king Lir. 

I have left them merged here but some scholars prefer to separate the personalities.

He married Aobh the foster daughter of Bodb Dearg after his first wife died and she gave birth to the famed children who were turned into swans by their jealous aunt and step-mother Aoife.
