Ethnea was the daughter of Balor of the Mighty Blows who married Cian the son of Diancecht of the Tuatha Dé Danann to bring peace between her race and theirs.

It was predicted by one of the Fomorian druids that a grandson of Balor's would defeat him in battle, and this happened at the Second Battle of Magh Tuiredh when Lugh hit Balor's baleful eye with a slingshot and it then turned against his own army.

There are also folklore versions of the tale of which the story 'How Balor was defeated' is an example.
