Loughconway Wedge Chamber/Tomb

Name: Loughconway Wedge Chamber / Tomb.

Location: Loughconway Townland, Kilclare, Leitrim, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.

Access: There is a lane that runs to a private house that is close to the site and they will usually give permission to visit the site if asked, the site is on private land. From Carrick-on-Shannon take the road to Ballinamore. Follow the road to the village of Kilclare and take the turning just before the village on the Left side. Take the road running North until you come to a crossroads then turn right and take the road to the East for about 1 km the private lane is the turning to the right at the top of a rise. Follow the lane to its end. Lough Conway is south and the site is just to the west across 2 fields. Boots required.

Description: This site is a Wedge Tomb set into a Horseshoe shaped Mound. The 'Tomb' sits at the back of the hollow created by the two arms of the Horseshoe. You would have to have walked between the two arms of the mound to the entrance of the tomb. The stones themself are just the door into the tomb with the mound being the tomb itself. The mound is now covered with some very old Hawthorne trees. There are at least 27 of them on the mound. These trees were very important to the fairy folk.

Measurements: This site consists of a Horseshoe shaped mound with a 3 stone entrance. 2 support stones , 1 cap stone.

Mound Measurements: Length - 21.35m , Width Of Arms - 6.1m , Inside Width - 5.49m , Inside Length - 15.25m , Doorway to back of mound - 6.1m , Height of mound -0.6m

Doorway Stones: East Stone - H-70cm , L-150cm , W-26cm ; West Stone - H-60cm , L-180cm , W- 23cm ; Cap Stone - L-175cm , B-110cm , W-30cm.
