Carrowkeel Passage Chambers with Cairn's

 
 

Name : Carrowkeel Passage Chambers with cairns Coverings, 11 sites in all.

Location : Carrowkeel Megalithic Cemetary, Bricklieve Mountains, Castlebaldwin, Co Sligo, Ireland.

Access : There is road and lane access to within a 5 min climb of the sites. It is well sign posted. From Castlebaldwin take the road to Ballymote. A half mile from Castlebaldwin there is a Y junction take the South-western road. Follow the road for about 3 miles and take the turn to the left then the right and follow the road until the end. The lane is in a bad state and at the side of a fall so go slow.

Description : A large megalitic site with 11 Passage chambers covering the top of the 3 peaks of the Bricklieve Mountains is one of the most active megalithic areas in Ireland.

The photos above show the first passage tomb that you will come across as you walk up from the car park. It is the most complete of the Carrowkeel passage tombs and is still accessible although great caution should be taken inside these tombs. The entrance has a Pillarstone standing in front of the entrance way. This Pillarstone has a hole in it.
