Peists are supernatural lake-dwelling creatures, rather like the famous Nessie of Scotland. They have been sighted in modern times in lakes in Roscommon and other lakes around Ireland. Of course they are notoriously difficult to verify, despite lake watches by enthusiasts and modern journalists. They are described as being akin to giant conger eels having the length of seven yards and a thick body like a bull's and a head with a mane on it like a horse's.
