Wood Sprites were the fairy elementals who lived in the trees and the woods.
They were particularly fond of the Oak, the Ash and the Hawthorn tree.
These trees were considered sacred trees to the Ancient Celts and were not tampered with.
Even in modern times it is considered unlucky to cut down one of these Fairy-Trees as the spirit who dwells within will wreak revenge on the offending party
