Mountmelleray Ogham Stones Info & Photo Gallery
Location: Mt. Melleray Monastery, Mountmelleray, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford.
Access: By road to the Monastery with parking facility beside the Stones. Take the R669 North out of Cappoquin for 3km then follow the signposts for the Monastery.
Description: All of these stone have been moved from their original positions to the monastery. They are fine examples of ogham stones
Stone 1 : The most intersting of the stones with the inscription on three of the edges and two cut elongated hollows on one of the narrow sides. Despite the fact that some of the letter are missing it has been reconstructed as follows
DEBRA[NI] MAQI ELTI [A]V[I] [O]G[ATO]S
That is: Debrani son of Elti grandson of Ogatos
Stone 2: The lower part of the stone is missing along with the start of the inscription which runs up one side only and reads as follows
Vagni mucoi cunia
That is: Descendant of Cunia
This man may have been related to the individual commemorated on stone 3 as they are both descended from Cunia or Cunea.
Stone 3: The base of this stone is missing along with the start of the inscription. The inscription has been reconstructed as follows:
[CU]NAMAQI LUGUDECA MUC[OI] CUNEA
That is: Cunamaqi Lugudeca descendant of Cunea
Stone 4: This is just the lower part of a stone with the start of the inscription
That is: ... grandson ...
Stone 5: The top of the stone is missing along with the final word of the inscription. What survives reads:
NISIGNI MAQ ER[...]I
That is: Nisigni Son of Er...i ?
Measurements: Many of the stones are incomplete so it is hard to give proper measurements on the original sizes of the stones.
