Gráinne was daughter to Cormac Mac Art the High King of Ireland and although many men had wanted to marry her she had refused them all.  Fionn Mac Cumhaill sent two messengers looking for her hand in marriage and she just said if he 'be a good enough son-in-law for my father then he is good enough for me.'

She had not considered that Fionn might be older than her father, when she saw his grey hair she was shocked and nothing he could do would please her, this was at her wedding feast.

Then she saw Diarmuid Ui Duibhne whom none could refuse and she fell in love with him.  She put a sleeping potion in everyone's wine and put a geas on Diarmuid so that he was forced to elope with her.  The stories of Diarmuid and Gráinne's chase across Ireland are many.  It was said that this caused a rift between the High King and the Fianna.

In the end the chase is called off and they are allowed to live near Ben Bulben in Co. Sligo and raise four sons and a daughter.  When Diarmuid is killed by his half-brother in the form of a boar,  Gráinne forgives Fionn and becomes his wife.
